It's back to school and lots of lessons are already being learned - but one that is missing quite often these days is the value of learning from our mistakes... our failures. Without the failures how can are children build their self-esteem and learn greater things for their future?
Best-selling author of The Secret of Successful Failing, a mom and an advocate of learning from our failures, Gina Mollicone-Long believes that when it comes to self-esteem, our schools are getting a failing grade. At a time when even the word “failing” has become taboo and where one school in California banned a game of tag (because it “created a self-esteem issue” since someone had to be “it” and that someone was a “victim,”) it seems to Mollicone-Long and concerned parents everywhere that school systems’ efforts of increasing student’s self-esteem has turned sickly. A three-kilometer fun run with his young sons in 1981 was the catalyst that made then out-of-shape, overweight John Stanton realize he had to change his lifestyle. Then a food industry executive who smoked two packs of cigarettes a day, Stanton began running secretly before dawn because he felt self-conscious about having his neighbours see “this chubby little guy” who could only run from lamppost to lamppost before having to take a walk break.
In 1984 Stanton opened a store and meeting place for runners in an 8x10 foot room of an old house shared with a hairdressing shop in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Twenty years later, the Running Room he founded is one of North America's most recognized names in running and walking. In late 2004, to be more inclusive, his company launched the Walking Room - a mirror of the Running Room concept. The store caters specifically to the needs of walkers. Books: Running: Start to finish Comment from John: Thanks for the great interview this evening nice to work with such a professional show!
Stay running and stay having fun! -- John Stanton |

Imagine there was a magic land. And in that magic land there was a potion...no, strike that, a pixie dust - that could make everything it touched taste like bacon. You'd want to move there wouldn't you? Well so would Brad. Now get this. That magic place is the world we live in. And the pixie dust exists. It's called Bacon Salt and it even has a little friend named Baconnaise. The products are outrageous enough, but wait until you hear how the founders started the company by using Facebook. | People starting out in business tend to seek step-by-step formulas or specific rules, but in reality there are no magic bullets. Rather, says veteran entrepreneur Norm Brodsky, there’s a mentality that helps street-smart people solve problems and pursue opportunities as they arise. He calls it “the knack,” and it has made all the difference to the eight successful start-ups of his career.
